Who can actually fly here

Access is for current UHPC members holding a BHPA pilot rating, flying within the club's site rules and the day's conditions. The club holds permission from the landowner, which is why the rules matter and why the public cannot simply walk up and launch. Mayobridge North is a northerly-wind site, so it stays quiet unless the wind sits in that quarter. If you have never flown, the way to start is a tandem flight or a Club Pilot Novice course with one of the accredited Northern Ireland schools; new students get a year of free UHPC membership when they begin a course. You will not get airborne here by turning up.

Flying here runs on the weather, so slots move at short notice — take the reschedule, it’s part of the sport. Some of the sites and clubs listed on Days Out NI are for members and qualified pilots rather than walk-in visitors, so check what’s on offer before you set off. And check the age, weight and health limits before you book: they’re set by the aircraft, not by anyone being fussy.

The story

About it

Mayobridge North is one of the sites looked after by UHPC, the Ulster Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club, a BHPA-registered club that traces its roots to the Ulster Hang Gliding Club founded in 1975. The club manages access to more than 40 inland and coastal sites across Northern Ireland, chosen to cover every wind direction and to sit within about 90 minutes' drive of most of the province.

Because each site is flown by permission from its landowner, the club keeps a members' sites guide setting out the rules for each one. Mayobridge North is the northerly-wind option in the Mournes group, used when the wind direction rules out the higher hills.
