A farm shop that turned into a fire in a wood
Fodder began as a small farm shop, and for a plain reason: Finnebrogue Woods is a working farm raising Dexter cattle on its grassland, and somebody wanted a way to sell that beef directly rather than send it off. A shop is the simplest answer to that question.
Then people wanted it cooked. So a small cafe went in to show the beef off, and rather than build a room they put up tipis and lit a fire in the floor. Canvas overhead, string lights, long wooden benches, and a log burning in a pit in the middle where everybody can see it. It is a strange thing to find down a lane outside Downpatrick, and it works completely.
The trails came after that. Mature woodland, a lake, the wildlife that comes with both — cut and waymarked for Fodder's own customers so a lunch could turn into an afternoon and people could get among trees for an hour. The tipis are hired out for parties now, and the same kitchen caters the weddings held on the estate.
Go on a cold, wet, miserable day. That's the secret. The woods smell like something you'd pay for, the fire is doing exactly what a fire is for, and you'll walk back to the car warm, fed and pleased with yourself.
