About Down County Museum
The museum occupies the old county gaol of Down, built in 1796 and closed as a prison in 1830. Over those years it held thousands of prisoners, among them rebels from the 1798 rising and convicts awaiting transportation to Australia. The restored cell block and Governor's Residence are the heart of the visit today.
Now run by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, the museum cares for around 12,000 objects and 50,000 photographs documenting the archaeology, history and culture of County Down. Its 'Down Through Time' exhibition is the permanent centrepiece, with the recreated Ballykinlar History Hut in the courtyard added more recently, complete with a 360-degree virtual reality version you can view online.
