A playground with a zip-line, and a train

The adventure play park has a zip-line, slides and climbing frames, and it works for toddlers through to older kids. Dogs aren't allowed inside the play area, so it stays clean for little ones on the ground. Next to it, the Steamers kiosk does hot drinks, ice cream and snacks, weekends only from September to Easter and daily through the summer. And the miniature railway, said to be the longest in Ireland, runs a 1km loop for £2.50 a ride, weekends out of season and every day in summer. That's an easy hour or two before you've even started on the walks.

The story

About the park

Delamont spreads across roughly 200 acres of woodland and parkland on the shores of Strangford Lough, two kilometres south of Killyleagh. It was once a private estate and is now a country park run by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, having previously been managed by Down District Council. The grounds include a heronry, a campsite run by the Camping and Caravanning Club, and a visitor centre with a shop and information point.

The park's landmark is the Strangford Stone, raised on 26 June 1999. A single 47-tonne block of granite was quarried from Slieve Donard, and 1,000 young people aged 14 to 20 hauled it upright by hand to mark the millennium. At around 10 metres it is the tallest megalith in Ireland, standing at the top of the hill with views to the Mourne Mountains.
