Plan your visit

The treks

You choose a one or two-hour trek and head out on a steady hunter-type horse through the countryside around Tollymore Forest Park and into the foothills of the Mournes, with river crossings along the route. Groups are capped at around six or seven riders so the guides can keep everyone together and everyone gets a real ride. This is escorted trail riding, not tuition, so you need to be a competent novice or better, comfortable at walk and trot on open ground.

The story

About the place

Mourne Trail Riding Centre is a family-run business established in 1984, set a mile from Tollymore Forest Park in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains near Newcastle. It has built a strong local reputation for genuine trail riding.

The centre deliberately caters for riders who can already ride rather than running beginner lessons, taking small groups out on hunter-type horses so the focus stays on the ride and the scenery. It also offers livery and holiday livery.
