The Mournes hold more than 20 distinct crags with over 1,000 traditional routes. The rock is well-weathered granite, sound and rough, full of rounded breaks, cracks and large featureless expanses. Lower Cove is widely regarded as the best individual crag, with roughly 100 routes on steep, sheltered buttresses. Binnian Tors carries around 160 routes across all grades, Spellack about 58, and Bearnagh Tors around 49 with some of the finest views in the range. Grades span Very Diff and Severe through to E-grade testpieces, and the climbing is often bold, so some routes take little protection and gear placement can be a fine art.
Outdoor crags have annual gatherings and club meets rather than a fixed timetable; Mountaineering Ireland and local clubs such as Belfast Climbing Club run meets, courses and trips in the Mournes. Check their pages for current dates, and book a qualified instructor if you are newer to trad leading.
