What you can actually do

Coasteering is the flagship: a guided mix of rock-hopping, scrambling, swimming and cliff-jumping along the shore with a qualified leader. The kayak tour starts with a short skills lesson in the shelter of the harbour or beach, then heads out as a group past caves, channels and lagoons towards Elephant Rock. SUP and surf sessions are also on offer, with a giant multi-person paddleboard aimed at groups, stags, hens and parties. You book a led session rather than hiring kit and going it alone, and instructors and equipment including wetsuits are provided. A basic level of swimming ability is needed; confirm the minimum age for each activity with the operator as it varies.

The story

About the operator

Active Adventures NI has been running coastal adventures for 16-plus years and was named Best Adventure Sports Provider at the NI Business Awards. Sessions are led by trained instructors and the operator carries full public liability insurance.

The operator is best known for coasteering and kayak tours on the Causeway Coast around Ballintoy, with its kayak trip to the well-known Elephant Rock a signature outing. Note: despite a Newcastle/Mournes listing, the operator's own site and address place its main base on the north coast at Ballintoy.
