Plan your visit

A guided cruise with the stories told as you sail

This is a skippered sightseeing cruise, not a self-drive hire or a fast RIB safari. A local guide-skipper takes you out on Lower Lough Erne and points out the islands, shoreline and history along the way. The one-hour trip circles Enniskillen's island town; the 90-minute cruise includes a guided visit to the monastic ruins at Devenish Island. Boats are covered, and the 12-seat Island Discovery is all-electric and listed as wheelchair accessible, making it a quieter, smoother trip suited to families and mixed-ability groups. Wildlife and clear views are never guaranteed, but you may catch lough birdlife and open-water scenery on a good day.

The story

About the trip

Erne Water Taxi was set up by local people who spent years exploring Fermanagh by boat, kayak and rod, and wanted to share the lough's islands, stories and quiet places with visitors. It runs guided cruises on Lower Lough Erne from the jetty at Enniskillen Castle.

The route is best known for its run out to Devenish Island, one of the most important early monastic sites in Ireland, with its round tower and ruins. The operator runs covered boats, including an all-electric vessel.
