About Fermanagh County Museum
Fermanagh County Museum was established in 1976 and opened to the public in 1977. Its collections are housed within Enniskillen Castle, a stronghold built by the Gaelic Maguire chieftains nearly 600 years ago on the bank of the River Erne. The site became a key crossing point and was fought over repeatedly through the plantation of Ulster.
The castle's most recognisable feature is the twin-towered Watergate, with its conical turrets, built by William Cole and completed around 1614 after he was made Constable of Enniskillen Castle in 1609. The museum complex was redeveloped and officially reopened in 2016 with new galleries and a visitor centre overlooking Lough Erne.
Today the site holds two museums under one roof, the Fermanagh County Museum and the Inniskillings Museum, run by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.
