Seven galleries from prehistory to plantation

The museum runs Fermanagh's history across seven galleries, from the first settlers and crannog dwellers through the Medieval Maguires Gallery to the 17th-century plantation. The Drumclay crannog excavation is the highlight, with over 5,500 objects recovered that reveal daily life on a lake dwelling roughly a thousand years ago. You also explore the Maguire story in the castle keep and can look into restoration viewing rooms where work goes on. Your ticket includes the Inniskillings Museum next door, covering the local regiments.

The story

About Fermanagh County Museum

Fermanagh County Museum was established in 1976 and opened to the public in 1977. Its collections are housed within Enniskillen Castle, a stronghold built by the Gaelic Maguire chieftains nearly 600 years ago on the bank of the River Erne. The site became a key crossing point and was fought over repeatedly through the plantation of Ulster.

The castle's most recognisable feature is the twin-towered Watergate, with its conical turrets, built by William Cole and completed around 1614 after he was made Constable of Enniskillen Castle in 1609. The museum complex was redeveloped and officially reopened in 2016 with new galleries and a visitor centre overlooking Lough Erne.

Today the site holds two museums under one roof, the Fermanagh County Museum and the Inniskillings Museum, run by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.
