Two ways to climb under one roof

The lead wall is 9.5m high and 11m wide with over 40 routes, from gentle slab lines for first-timers up to technical and strenuous problems higher in the grades. Four auto-belay devices let you climb the wall on your own without a partner to hold the rope. Alongside it is a bouldering area, 4.5m high and 10m wide, climbed without ropes over matting. New wall users get an induction, and qualified staff run skill-development sessions for those building toward independent climbing. Under-14s must be closely supervised by an adult independent wall user at all times; 14-17s can take the Independent Wall User Test for solo access.

What to bring

  • 👕Comfy clothes you can move inNothing restrictive — you want to reach, step high and bend.
  • 📱A booking, or a planMost walls want you registered or booked in; crags want your route picked and someone told.
  • 💧WaterClimbing is thirsty work, and out on the rock there is nowhere to buy any.
  • An honest check of your gradeBe straight about your experience — pick a level you will enjoy rather than survive.

The story

About the venue

Hotrock is owned by Mountaineering Ireland and managed at Tollymore National Outdoor Centre, the national outdoor centre on the fringe of Tollymore Forest Park and the northern edge of the Mourne Mountains. The centre is long established as a training base for hillwalking, mountaineering and rock climbing in Northern Ireland, which is why the wall is geared toward building real climbing skill rather than just a one-off scramble.
