Purpose-built walls, climbed with an instructor

The centre has both indoor and outdoor purpose-built climbing walls, run as a single 2-hour session under the supervision of qualified instructors. It is open to ages 6 and up, with a maximum of 16 in a group. The session is pitched at learning basic climbing skills and technique while building coordination, stamina and determination, so it works for first-timers and younger climbers rather than experienced leaders looking to project hard routes. This is supervised group climbing, not a self-led wall where you clip in and climb on your own, and not an outdoor crag needing your own rope and rack.

The story

About the venue

Ganaway Activity Centre is owned by the Belfast Battalion of the Boys Brigade and run on a 13-acre site on the Ards Peninsula, between Millisle and Ballywalter, overlooking the Irish Sea. It operates as a residential and day centre for Boys Brigade units, schools, colleges, youth organisations and corporate groups, with the stated aim of building self-esteem, teamwork and responsible citizenship through outdoor activity.

Alongside its climbing walls it offers more than twenty supervised activities and accommodation for up to 140 people across lodges and glamping pods, making it a base for full activity days and group residentials rather than a drop-in climbing wall.
