A grand Italianate mansion set in its own parkland near the sea — the private family home of the Dunleaths, with a glorious domed conservatory and landscaped gardens you can visit by arrangement.

  • What you'll see — the Italianate mansion (thought to have been designed by Charles Lanyon in the mid-1800s), its fine domed conservatory or palm house, and the landscaped gardens and parkland that surround the house.
  • How to visit — the house and gardens open to groups by appointment and guided tours, and the estate hosts events and weddings through the year. Enquire ahead to see what's on and to book a tour.
  • How long — a house-and-gardens tour typically runs around 1–2 hours; longer if you're at an event or exploring the wider grounds.
  • Price — tours and venue hire are priced on request — contact the estate for group rates and availability. We never quote a figure we can't confirm.
  • It's a private family home — not a casual walk-in. You visit by pre-arranged group tour or at events, so don't turn up expecting to wander in off the road.
  • Enquire ahead for garden and house openings. Dates are limited and by arrangement, so always contact the estate before you plan a trip.
  • What to bring & nearby — comfy shoes for the gardens and a coat for the weather; the village of Ballywalter along the coast has cafés and a beach, with more to eat around Greyabbey and Portaferry.
  • Parking — there's space on the estate for group visits and events; confirm arrangements when you book your tour.
Plan your visit

By group tour, or at an event

Ballywalter Park is a lived-in family home, so it doesn't keep daily public opening hours the way a museum does. Instead, the house and gardens welcome groups by appointment — garden clubs, historical societies and coach parties can arrange a guided tour of the mansion and its grounds. The estate also runs as an events and wedding venue, and opens for the occasional special day, so it's worth asking what's coming up. Because everything is by arrangement, the way in is always the same: get in touch with the estate first, agree a date, and confirm the group size, timings and rates before you travel. We don't list fixed hours or prices here because they're set per booking — enquire and you'll get the real answer.

The story

A Victorian palace on the peninsula

Ballywalter Park is a grand Italianate country house on the Ards Peninsula, near the village of Ballywalter in County Down. It was built in the mid-19th century for the Mulholland family — Belfast linen merchants who later became the Barons Dunleath — and is thought to be the work of the architect Charles Lanyon, the man behind many of Victorian Belfast's landmark buildings. The result is a mansion in the palatial Italianate style, with a fine domed conservatory or palm house said to be among the best of its kind.

It remains a private family home to this day, still lived in by the Dunleath family, which is part of what makes a visit feel special — this is a working estate rather than a museum. The house and its landscaped gardens open to groups by appointment and for guided tours, and the estate hosts weddings and events through the year. Get in touch and arrange a visit, and you'll see a Victorian palace still very much part of the peninsula around it.
