A proper family seaside day on the Ards Peninsula — a sandy beach and promenade at Millisle, with a purpose-built seawater lagoon and children's paddling pool that refill fresh on every tide, a pirate-ship play park, and Ballycopeland Windmill just up the road. Free.

  • What you'll do — build sandcastles on the sand, splash in the enclosed seawater lagoon and the little ones' paddling pool, walk the promenade, explore rockpools on the northern stretch, and let the kids loose on the pirate-ship play park. Ballycopeland Windmill is a five-minute drive for an easy add-on.
  • How long & who for — allow half a day, easily a full one on a sunny day. Made for families with young children — bucket-and-spade weather.
  • Cost & parkingfree. There's a large car park on the shorefront plus more parking on Ballywalter Road just south, so there's plenty of room.
  • Food & toilets — there are public toilets and picnic tables at the beach park, and shops and cafés a short walk into the village. Bring water and a picnic and you're sorted.
  • Bring the lot — buckets and spades, towels, swim gear for the lagoon, a coat for the sea breeze, plenty of water, and a hat and shade for a hot day.
  • No lifeguard. There's no lifeguard service here, so keep a close eye on children in the lagoon and the sea, and mind the tide.
  • Dogs allowed — keep them under control. Dogs are welcome but must be kept under control, and please clean up after them.

The story

A bucket-and-spade favourite

Millisle has been a go-to seaside stop for generations of Ards Peninsula families. The village sits right on the open east coast, and its beach mixes the best of both — a soft sandy stretch on the southern half for castles and paddling, and a rockier, rockpool-rich shore to the north for a good root about.

The clever bit is the lagoon. Rather than leaving families at the mercy of the tide, someone built a wall out into the sea to hold a pool of calm water and sand — around 150 metres of it — with a little paddling pool alongside for the smallest ones. Every high tide flushes it through with fresh seawater, so there's somewhere sheltered to splash whatever the sea is doing. Add the promenade, the pirate-ship play park and Ballycopeland Windmill up the road, and you've got an easy, low-cost day that keeps the whole family happy.
