Sheltered reefs a short fin from the slipway

The area inside the harbour wall is a sheltered sandy bay, and the seaward bedrock wall is covered in dense, diverse seaweed and kelp. That mix suits a calm-day beginner snorkel close in, and the wall is a recognised training-dive site for qualified divers. Among the kelp you may see crabs, sea squirts and soft corals, and seals and seabirds frequent the harbour and the adjacent Isle of Muck reserve. None of this is guaranteed. Stay within your training, snorkel with at least one other person, and keep to the sheltered inner area if you are new to it.

The story

About it

Portmuck is a small inlet harbour at the north-eastern tip of Islandmagee, below Mullaghboy village and beside the Isle of Muck nature reserve. It is known for its slipway, sheltered inner bay and views towards Larne, Scotland and the Irish Sea, and it doubles as a launch point for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing and walking the National Trust coastal routes.

DiveNI lists the harbour as a shore-dive site that can be dived either side of the wall, with bedrock forming a steep seaward wall over fine sand. The dense seaweed cover makes it a suitable training site, with recreational boat traffic the main hazard.
