A sheltered horseshoe of golden sand tucked into the top of Islandmagee, with rocky points either side and views clear across the Irish Sea. A proper, easy family beach — free, with a big car park right across the road.

  • What you'll do — spread out on the sand, paddle in the calm, sheltered water, hunt the rock pools at the edges, fly a kite on the grassy top, and take in the coast views out to the Maidens and up the Antrim shore. A caravan park sits right beside it, so it's a favourite summer spot.
  • How long & who for — a quick hour or a whole afternoon; the flat sand and shallow water make it great for all ages, little ones included. Buckets-and-spades weather.
  • Cost & parkingfree to use, and the car park is free too — a big one (around 150 spaces) across the road, reached by a gentle ramp or a set of steps down to the sand.
  • Facilities & food — public toilets and baby-changing by the car park, and a small shop above the western end of the beach. Bring a picnic and plenty of water to be sure.
  • No lifeguard. There's no lifeguard here, though the council keeps life rings around the bay. Mind the tide, keep an eye on the kids, and skip the water in rough conditions.
  • Dogs on leads in summer. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a lead from 11am to 6pm, June to August (plus bank holidays and busy days). Dog bins are provided — clean up after them.

Can I just turn up? Yes — it's free, with a big car park

Browns Bay is open and free to enjoy any day of the year in daylight — no booking, no ticket. There's a large free car park across the road (around 150 spaces), with a gentle ramp down at one end and steps at the other. It's a designated bathing beach with a Seaside Award, and the sheltered, horseshoe shape keeps the water calmer than the open coast — but there's no lifeguard, so take care in the water. Facilities are decent for a small beach: toilets and baby-changing by the car park, plus a small shop above the western end.

Good to know:

The beach toilet block has been through refurbishment, with temporary toilets in use at times — so it's worth checking on the day if you're relying on them. There's no lifeguard, so keep a close eye on children in the water. Confirm toilet opening and dog-rule details with the council before you set off.

Honest steer: the grassy area above the beach is accessible for wheelchairs and takes in the view, but the sand itself is reached by a ramp or steps and soft sand is hard going for wheels.

The story

The little beach at the top of the island

Islandmagee isn't really an island — it's a long, green finger of land between Larne Lough and the open sea — and Browns Bay is its beach. Tucked into the very top of the peninsula, cradled between Skenaghan Point and Barrs Point, it curves round in a neat horseshoe that catches the sun and turns its back on the worst of the wind. That shelter is the whole secret: while the open Antrim coast can be wild, the water here stays calmer, the sand gathers, and families have come for generations to paddle and picnic.

It's a small beach with a big view. Stand on the sand and the Irish Sea opens out ahead, with the Maidens lighthouses offshore and the headlands of the Antrim coast running north. A caravan park sits alongside, the shop's a stroll away, and the Gobbins Cliff Path — that Edwardian adventure walk bolted to the sea cliffs — is just down the road. Come for the beach; stay for the coast.
