What you can actually do here

This is a self-access shore dive and snorkel spot, not a course or a guided trip. Qualified divers come for the maerl beds off Ballygally Head, a documented feature where coralline red algae form beds out across the sea bed in the deeper sand and weed. Closer in it is a gentle sandy and boulder-strewn beach that confident snorkellers can explore in good conditions. Marine life is never guaranteed, but you may see shore crabs, small fish and kelp life around the rocks. If you are new to this, go with a club or guided operator first rather than diving solo.

Conditions here change with the weather and the tide, and visibility changes with them — clear and calm one day, murky and rough the next. Check a forecast and a tide table before you set off. This is a self-access site with no lifeguard, so match it to the experience you actually have, go with a buddy, and never dive alone.

The story

About it

Ballygally beach sits on the Causeway Coastal Route about 5km (3 miles) north of Larne, a sandy, boulder-strewn shore facing north towards the Glens of Antrim. It is not an RNLI lifeguarded beach, so treat it as having no lifeguard cover, though there are standard lifebuoys along the beach.

For divers, the interest lies off Ballygally Head, where maerl beds — slow-growing beds of coralline red algae — are scattered across the sea bed, in places in thick quantities. The site is documented by Dive Club NI among Northern Ireland's shore dives.
