Killylane sits on open moorland with a screen of trees around it, so you get a wide sky and shelter from stray light at the same time. Satellite light-pollution data puts it in the dark-site bracket, and the local astronomy community rates it, which is why it makes the stargazing lists. On a clear, moonless night the stars come out thickly and you can often trace the Milky Way, spot planets and, in season, watch for meteors. Killylane has no fixed programme, but local astronomy groups use it for observing nights, and the dates most worth planning around are the meteor showers, such as the Perseids in August and Geminids in December, on a clear moonless evening.

You turn off the Larne to Ballymena road and the reservoir sits out on open moorland, ringed by trees that cut the last of the roadside glow.
