What you'll actually see

In summer the islands are loud and busy - over 1,000 pairs of terns nest here, mainly sandwich terns and common terns wheeling, diving for fish and fending off each other. Hidden among them is Northern Ireland's last breeding pair of roseate terns, one of the rarest seabirds in Europe, so spotting one is a real birdwatcher's prize. Closer to shore you'll find swans, oystercatchers, gulls and sandpipers picking over the mud. Kids can count the different birds and watch the terns plunge for fish, which keeps them busy for a while. A scope or decent binoculars makes a big difference, as the islands are around 500 metres out.

Good to know before you go:

There's no visitor centre or events programme at the viewpoint itself, but RSPB and local wildlife groups run seasonal birdwatching days and surveys around Larne Lough, and the wider Mid and East Antrim area has plenty on through the year. Always check before travelling, as island conservation work can affect access along the shore.

The story

About the place

Larne Lough is a Special Protection Area, ASSI and Ramsar site, recognised for its internationally important breeding terns. At its heart are two tiny islands: natural Swan Island, just 0.14 hectares of low shingle, and the larger Blue Circle Island, built in 1990 from quarry waste by the Blue Circle Cement company to give the terns more room to nest.

Both islands are managed by the RSPB, which owns Swan Island and leases Blue Circle Island. Staff clear vegetation to create the bare ground terns like, repair breakwaters, and use anti-predator fencing and nest boxes to protect the colony - including specially built concrete boxes for the rare roseate terns.

The lough is the only remaining breeding site for roseate terns in Northern Ireland. Numbers have fallen sharply from 20 to 35 pairs in the late 1980s to a single pair in recent years, which is why public access to the islands is kept off-limits and the birds are watched only from the shore.
