The music

Live acts play the Public Bar and Back Bar, and Lavery's own what's-on page lists them free to get in. The bill runs to local singer-songwriters, duos and covers acts rather than touring bands, so it changes week to week. Check laverys.com before you travel if you want a specific name.

Good to know before you go:

Lavery's publishes its live music line-up on its own site, usually a few weeks ahead, and the acts rotate constantly. Comedy runs midweek and the pool hall takes bookings all year.

The story

The oldest family-owned pub in Belfast

Lavery's has stood on Bradbury Place for close to a hundred years, and it is still run by the same family. Generations of Belfast students have had their first pint here, and a good number of local musicians have played their first paid gig on the small stage in the Public Bar.

The building grew sideways and upwards over the decades rather than being designed in one go, which is why it feels like a warren. Ground-floor bar, back bar, terraces, then the enormous pool hall on top. It is one of the few places in the city where the room you walk into is nothing like the room three flights up.
