A 15m wall and a bouldering area under one roof

The headline wall stands 15m tall with 39 independent climbing lines, taking in top-roping, some auto-belay, lead and competition climbing. Off to the side is a dedicated bouldering wall, where you climb low to the ground over mats with no rope or partner needed. To climb unsupervised you register at reception and answer competency questions, with a fully registered status for roped climbing and bouldering, or a bouldering-only option for the boulder wall. Climbers who can't yet show competence start with a taster session or beginners' course. As an NICAS centre offering all five levels, it works for first-timers learning the ropes through to experienced leaders.

About the venue

Foyle Arena is a Derry City and Strabane District Council leisure centre on Limavady Road in the Waterside, and its climbing wall is one of the larger indoor walls in the North West. The 15m competition-standard wall was built with 39 independent lines, and the centre is Northern Ireland's only Primary NICAS centre offering all five levels of the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme, making it a hub for learning and competition climbing in the region.
