Ireland's premier trad crag

Fair Head is a 5km dolerite escarpment of vertical walls, soaring corners and long crack systems, climbed on traditional protection you place as you go — no fixed bolts. The route count tops 400, with grades starting in quantity around VS and stretching to E8, so most of the cliff is firmly experienced-climber territory. The classic crack-and-corner lines reward good jamming and a generous rack; guidebooks often advise doubling up on nuts and cams. There is also a vast bouldering resource of more than 500 problems in the boulder fields at Murlough Bay and below the Ballycastle Descent, though many have awkward landings so multiple pads help. This suits competent trad leaders and strong boulderers — not casual visitors or families.

Fair Head hosts a well-known annual climbing meet, usually held on the first weekend of June, when hundreds of climbers gather to climb, maintain routes and put up new lines. Beyond that the crag has no programme — it is a wild outdoor venue, not a centre running taster sessions. Check the latest guidebook and Mountaineering Ireland or local climbing pages for current meet dates and access notes before travelling.

The story

About the venue

Fair Head sits at the north-eastern corner of County Antrim, a 5km mountain cliff close to the sea and one of the biggest spans of climbable rock in north-west Europe. Its dolerite walls, columns and crack systems have made it a destination trad crag for decades, with development chronicled in the Mountaineering Ireland Fair Head guidebook and a dedicated bouldering guide.

The annual Fair Head meet, held each June, is a long-standing fixture in the Irish and British climbing calendar and a big part of the crag's reputation.
