Lessons for first-timers, kids and paddleboarders

This is a teaching school - you book a session and an ISA-qualified coach takes you out, rather than hiring kit and going it alone. Beginners are the bread and butter: a standard two-hour group surf lesson runs with a maximum 8:1 coaching ratio and keeps you at waist depth while you learn. There are also private and one-to-one lessons, two-hour paddleboard sessions, sunset surf and SUP experiences, and four-day kids' camps over the summer for ages 8 to 16. The minimum age is 8, under-18s need a parent or guardian to sign off, and you must be able to swim. Boards, a 5/3mm winter wetsuit, boots, hood and gloves are all supplied.

The story

About the operator

Troggs has been teaching the art of surfing on Portrush's East Strand since 1994, and it bills itself as the town's longest-running surf school, with instruction passed down through three generations of the family. Its instructors are ISA (International Surfing Association) qualified.

The school now operates from the East Strand Watersports Centre, on one of Northern Ireland's best-known surf beaches on the Causeway Coast. It has picked up TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice recognition in recent years.
