What you can do on the water

This is a school, so you book a session rather than rock up and hire. Choose a beginner group surf lesson, a private lesson, or a stand-up-paddleboarding session, all kept to small groups for better coaching. Wetsuit and board are provided. It suits complete beginners and improvers alike, and there are kids' summer surf camps plus private hen and stag bookings. You'll need basic swimming ability and to be comfortable in the sea; the instructors are ASI-qualified Level 1-3 surf coaches and beach lifeguard trained.

Good to know before you go:

Operators like this run kids' summer surf camps, taster sessions, group bookings and seasonal lessons through the warmer months. Every session is weather- and tide-dependent, so check their own pages for current dates, bookings and prices.

The story

About the operator

SUB6 was founded by Carl Russell after more than a decade building an award-winning surf school on the North Coast. The business brings a surf and SUP school, an online surf store and lifeguard training under one roof, with instructors holding ASI Level 1-3 surf coaching qualifications and beach lifeguard awards.

The name SUB6 refers to the minus-6-degree longitude that runs through the North Coast, from Magilligan Point to Cushendun. Alongside lessons, SUB6 offers RLSS-style lifeguard training courses and stocks surf gear from its own and partner brands.
