Granite cracks, slabs and steep walls

The climbing is good, with quality routes on steep rock and a genuine mix of grades from Severe up into the E grades. The left-hand buttress is quieter and holds some decent multi-pitch lines; the right-hand buttress is mostly single pitches to in-situ abseil points, and it is here the shale cap makes the rock feel different from standard Mournes granite. Classic routes give you a sense of the spread - Class Distinction is rated one of the best Severes in the Mournes, Falcon (HS), Virgo (VS) and Taurus (HVS) cover the middle, and Phantoms (E1), Penny Black (E2) and harder lines like X-Ray (E5) push into bold territory. It all leans trad, so you lead on your own protection. This suits competent climbers and aspirant leaders, not casual visitors.

Outdoor crags do not run sessions, but the wider Mournes climbing scene is active - clubs and qualified instructors run trad days, and Northern Ireland's headline outdoor meet is the Fair Head Meet up on the Antrim coast. About the venue

Pigeon Rock is one of the best known crags in the Mourne Mountains, largely because it offers the shortest walk-in of any of them, which has made it a long-standing evening venue for local climbers. Cleaning work over the years has freed up a number of very good routes from the vegetation that covers much of the cliff, and the crag is well documented in the comprehensive Mournes rock-climbing guidebook that covers over 26 crags and close to 1,000 trad routes across the range.
