Climb and abseil under instruction, no experience needed

The climbing on offer is a tower wall plus an abseil platform, run as supervised sessions with qualified instructors. You do not need any climbing background or your own equipment because helmets and harnesses are supplied and an instructor manages the ropes. Family fun days take children from age 8, and the climbing and abseiling also form part of group, school and team-building programmes. Because it is guided rather than a free-climb wall, it suits first-timers, nervous beginners and mixed-ability groups well. For taster rock climbing and abseiling, the centre has also used outdoor venues in the Mournes and at Fair Head with their instructors.

What to bring

  • 👕Comfy clothes you can move inNothing restrictive — you want to reach, step high and bend.
  • 📱A booking, or a planMost walls want you registered or booked in; crags want your route picked and someone told.
  • 💧WaterClimbing is thirsty work, and out on the rock there is nowhere to buy any.
  • An honest check of your gradeBe straight about your experience — pick a level you will enjoy rather than survive.

The story

About the venue

Lurgaboy Adventure Centre is a family-run business set up in 2004 by Armagh mountaineer Richard Dougan and his partner Arlene Robertson, inspired by Richard's role leading the 2003 Northern Ireland Everest expedition. The centre has grown into a 35-acre multi-activity site in South Armagh, offering instructor-led adventure days, residentials and team-building alongside its climbing and abseiling.
