A real South Armagh farmhouse, not a reconstruction

The draw here is authenticity. This is an actual two-roomed thatched dwelling and its outbuildings, saved and restored rather than rebuilt from scratch. The artefacts inside show how a Ring of Gullion family cooked, farmed and lived around the turn of the last century. It's a small collection, so allow maybe 30 to 45 minutes, and treat it as a glimpse into local heritage kept alive by the community.

Good to know before you go:

The Ring of Gullion and Slieve Gullion area runs a busy seasonal calendar — the Lúnasa festival, heritage-week walks, and traditional music nights in Mullaghbawn often coincide with the best chances to find small heritage sites open. Tie a visit to one of these events and check locally for any open days at the museum.

The story

About Mullaghbawn Folk Museum

The museum was created by the Mullaghbawn Historical Group, who restored a traditional two-roomed thatched farmhouse and its outbuildings during the 1970s. They filled it with everyday artefacts depicting the lives of the people of the Ring of Gullion in the previous century, preserving a way of rural life that was already disappearing.

It has always been a small, community-run heritage site rather than a major institution, and over the years its opening has been occasional. Anyone planning a visit should confirm the current status locally, as the surrounding Ring of Gullion area remains a strong draw for heritage and outdoor day trips in South Armagh.
