A gentler bay to learn the basics

The appeal here is shelter and a gentle gradient. The sand runs out into shallow water before it deepens, so you can wade in and get used to mask, snorkel and fins without a sudden drop. The interest is in the kelp and rock at the sides of the bay, where you may see crabs, small fish, anemones and shore life, and where seals sometimes pass through the lough. None of that is guaranteed on any given day. This suits someone building confidence on a calm day, ideally after a pool session or a guided trip, rather than a complete beginner heading out solo.

The story

About it

Helen's Bay is one of the beaches within Crawfordsburn Country Park on the southern shore of Belfast Lough, west of Bangor. The sandy, gently shelving beach has held a Green Coast Award for water quality and is popular for summer bathing, with a direct train from Belfast and a beach car park with toilets nearby.

It is not a managed dive site and has no lifeguard cover. Its reputation as a snorkel spot comes from being sheltered and easy to wade into rather than from facilities, so the usual cold-water and tide cautions apply.
