A warm 20-metre pool, a sauna, a steam room and a bubble spa — set in Lagan Valley parkland by Shaw's Bridge, a quarter of an hour from the city.

  • What you'll enjoy: The 20-metre indoor pool at Bodyscape, the health club inside the Crowne Plaza hotel, kept at a comfortable 29°C, with a sauna, steam room and a bubbling spa alongside. There's also a large gym and free classes, and a small beauty spa (BodySpa) for massages and facials.
  • How long: Pool sessions run for an hour. Allow an hour and a half if you want to take your time round the sauna and steam room too.
  • Book ahead: Pool time is by advance booking and is strongly recommended — call the leisure club on 028 9092 3650 before you travel. Spa treatments must be booked in advance.
  • Who it's for: There are family swim times and adult-only times, so check which session you're booking. Under-16s must be with an adult in the water throughout — a ratio of one adult to two children (under-4s) or one adult to three children (ages 5–15). The gym and the beauty spa are for over-16s only.
  • Cost: Day pass £15 for full use of the club and classes. Beauty treatments are charged separately, from around £45 for a massage. Private membership and gift vouchers are available.
  • When: Pool open Mon–Fri 6am–9.45pm, Sat–Sun and bank holidays 8am–7.45pm. The beauty spa runs Mon–Fri 9am–8pm, Sat–Sun 9am–7pm. Confirm hours before travelling.

What's actually here — the honest picture

This is a hotel leisure club with a small beauty spa attached, rather than a stand-alone destination spa. The heart of it is the 20-metre pool — two lanes, a family-friendly zone, and a bubble spa, sauna and steam room off to the side, all in an airy hall with windows onto the parkland. It's a genuinely relaxing swim-and-unwind, and the setting in Lagan Valley Regional Park is the nicest part. Alongside the pool there's a well-equipped gym with over 70 pieces of kit and a full timetable of free classes, from aqua fit to yoga. The beauty side, BodySpa, is a treatment-room operation using the TempleSpa range — massages, facials, and beauty treatments like waxing and brow work — booked and paid for separately. If you're picturing thermal suites, hydrotherapy pools and a spa lunch, that's not this place; if you want a warm swim, a sit in the steam room and maybe a massage, it does that well. One note from reviews: the pool is generally kept clean, though the odd guest has mentioned the water needing attention, so it's worth a quick look before you dive in.

A note on the name:

You may see this listed as the "Spirit Health Club" — that was an older Crowne Plaza brand, and it's a different club in Leeds. The Belfast leisure club is now Bodyscape, with the beauty side branded BodySpa. Same hotel, same pool — just the current name.

The story

Where the forest meets the river

The Crowne Plaza sits in Lagan Valley Regional Park, on Milltown Road by Shaw's Bridge — one of the green lungs of south Belfast, where the towpath runs along the River Lagan and the woodland comes right up to the water. Shaw's Bridge itself is a handsome five-arch stone bridge, the third to stand on the spot, and the surrounding parkland is criss-crossed with walking and cycling trails that carry on for miles in either direction.

It means the leisure club has an unusually pleasant backdrop for a hotel pool. You can pair a swim with a walk along the Lagan towpath, or a wander round the wider Lagan Valley, and turn a quick dip into a proper morning out. For all it's a working health club rather than a grand spa, the parkland setting is what lifts it above the ordinary — the quarter-hour from the city buys you a lot of green.

Whatever you're after — lengths in a warm pool, a slow sit in the steam room, or a massage to round it off — it's an easy, low-key place to unwind close to town. Book your pool time ahead, bring your own towel, and give yourself long enough to enjoy the water without watching the clock.
