Ireland's longest zipline, plus a coaster down the mountain

The River Rapid is the big one: 700 metres long, launching from a 100ft take-off tower down a 16% gradient to a 22ft landing platform, reaching up to 50mph as you cross the Colin River. If that sounds a lot, the Forest Flyover is a shorter 250m line running about 50ft above the forest floor, a good warm-up or a ride for smaller adventurers. Off the ziplines, the Black Bull Run alpine coaster sends you down 500 metres of steel track through two tunnels, and you brake yourself on the drops, three runs per ticket. Younger families can follow the Gruffalo Trail, which comes with a Julia Donaldson book, sticker and certificate. It's a full adventure complex rather than a single ride.

The story

About this place

Colin Glen Forest Park runs along the Colin River as it comes down off the Black Mountain on the western edge of Belfast. Once neglected ground, it has been developed by the Colin Glen Trust into one of Ireland's leading outdoor adventure parks, layering activity attractions onto the wooded river valley.

The park spreads across three entrances. The Mountain Entrance on Colinglen Road serves the ziplines and the Black Bull Run alpine coaster; the River Entrance on Stewartstown Road has the Gruffalo Trail, SKYTrek high-ropes, archery and laser tag; and the Leisure Entrance on Blacks Road covers the golf, driving range and 3G pitches.

Its headline claims are genuine firsts: the River Rapid is billed as Ireland's longest zipline at 700 metres, the Black Bull Run as Ireland's first alpine coaster, and the Gruffalo Trail as the island's only official one.
