Climb, zip and scramble

The pull here is the bigger adventure gear: a tall castle-themed climbing frame, an aerial runway your kids can ride along, tube slides and a large net to haul themselves up. Younger children get a separate, calmer area with swings, rockers, smaller slides and a sand play patch. It is laid out across a few levels among the trees, so there is plenty of scrambling and the odd uneven path between sections. Most families spend an hour or two here, longer if you bring a picnic and pair it with a wander up to the castle.

The story

About this place

The playground sits in the grounds of Belfast Castle on the slopes of Cave Hill, the basalt summit that overlooks the city and Belfast Lough. The estate is owned and run by Belfast City Council, which maintains the play park and the wider castle grounds.

Belfast Castle in its present form was completed in 1870 for the 3rd Marquess of Donegall, built in the Scottish Baronial style. The Cave Hill estate around it is criss-crossed with walking trails up to McArt's Fort and the cave-pocked cliffs that give the hill its name, making the playground a natural first stop before a longer family walk.
