Mostly a day to watch the racing

The circuit runs a busy calendar of car races, motorcycle meetings and kart events through the season. The Sunflower Trophy is its best-known end-of-season bike showpiece, and the Classic Bike Festival Ireland brings historic machines to the track. As a spectator day it suits all ages, with the action happening outdoors around a multi-configuration circuit that began life as a wartime runway. Race days follow a fixture calendar, so check what is on and the season before you set out, and dress for an outdoor day whatever the forecast.

The story

About the venue

Bishopscourt sits on a former RAF airfield near Downpatrick that became operational in 1943 as a wartime bomber base. Motor racing began on the runways and perimeter roads in the 1960s, paused during the 1970s, and resumed in 1992 after the site passed into private ownership.

Under management in place since 2001, the circuit was resurfaced and gained a new International extension in 2011. Today it is a permanent multi-configuration track hosting car, motorcycle and kart racing, track days and testing, and is best known for the Sunflower Trophy bike meeting.
