What's actually under the water

The beach itself is sandy and slopes into weed beds, but the draw for divers is the Gun's Island site out in the bay: sheer rock walls on both sides, large boulders and the odd swim-through, reaching a maximum depth of around 16m. It's described as one of the scenic Lecale dives and, unlike the high-current Narrows sites, can be dived at most tidal states. Gun's Island sits offshore and is usually reached by boat rather than swum to from the beach. It's a sensible choice for club dives and reasonably experienced divers building up coastal hours. You may see kelp, dogfish, crabs and lobster in the rocks, and seals pass through the wider Lecale coast, but nothing is guaranteed. Snorkellers can also explore the clear shallows, though this is a diving site at heart rather than a soft family paddling spot.

Conditions here change with the weather and the tide, and visibility changes with them — clear and calm one day, murky and rough the next. Check a forecast and a tide table before you set off. This is a self-access site with no lifeguard, so match it to the experience you actually have, go with a buddy, and never dive alone.

The story

About it

Strangford Lough and the Lecale coast are among Northern Ireland's top diving areas, known for wrecks, reefs and rocky outcrops. Ballyhornan beach sits beside the Gun's Island dive just offshore, one of the area's more forgiving sites at around 16m and diveable at most tidal states, which is why local sub-aqua clubs and divers use the bay. Gun's Island lies off the beach and is usually dived from a boat.

It is not a commercial centre — there is no booking desk, lifeguard or kit hire. For training or guided dives, BSAC clubs around Belfast and Lisburn and PADI operators such as DV Diving cover this stretch of coast.
