What the night gives you

Binevenagh's pull is height and openness. Perched on the escarpment with the coast below and hills behind, you get a big slice of sky with far less glow than you find near a town. On a clear, moonless night the stars come out thickly, and you can sometimes trace the Milky Way, spot bright planets, and in season watch for meteors. As with any outdoor spot, none of it is promised, so check that the sky is clear and the moon is low before you go.

Good to know before you go:

Binevenagh has no organised stargazing programme of its own, so the nights worth planning around are the meteor showers, such as the Perseids in August and Geminids in December, on a clear moonless evening.

The story

About Binevenagh Mountain Viewpoint

You climb the Bishop's Road up onto Binevenagh and the ground falls away to the coast below. By day the view runs across Lough Foyle to Donegal and out to the Scottish isles. After dark, up on the clifftop and away from the towns, the sky opens wide, and on a clear moonless night you can sometimes pick out the Milky Way and catch a meteor shower in season.
