The story

A patch of the tropics in the north-west

Just outside Letterkenny, at Loughnagin, a warm glasshouse holds a patch of the tropics year after year for the season. Step through the doors and the air changes — humid and green, thick with plants — and before long a butterfly drifts past your shoulder and settles on a leaf beside you. Hundreds of them fly free here, from the electric-blue morphos to the delicate paper kites, and there's no glass between you and them.

Beyond the butterfly house, Tropical World has grown into a proper little mini-zoo. Meerkats stand sentry in their enclosure, lemurs and marmosets watch from the branches, and exotic birds — lorikeets, turacos, the red-billed toucans — add their colour and noise. There are reptiles to meet, with handling sessions through the day, a bug and mini-beast area for the brave, a dinosaur-themed corner and an indoor play area to burn off the last of the energy.

Because so much of it is under cover, it has become one of those reliable rainy-day answers for families across the border in the north-west — a short drive over from Derry, and a warm, colourful hour or two whatever the Donegal sky is doing.
