A playground that holds the big kids and the little ones

The play park is the draw. There is a pirate ship to climb and command, a zip line, slides and a sand pit, and a separate area aimed at toddlers so the smallest ones are not jostling with teens. Equipment is rated for ages right up to teenagers, which is rarer than you would think. Bring a change of clothes for the sand pit and you will get a good hour or two out of it. The outdoor gym next to it means you can move while they play.

The story

About the park

People's Park is Portadown's Victorian town park, a 12-acre green space with a bandstand heritage, formal beds and a pond that has long been part of its character. The pond was lost for a time, then reinstated during the park's regeneration to boost biodiversity and give school groups somewhere to learn.

The major overhaul, funded with around 5.5 million through Peace III money, rebuilt the play park, gardens, amphitheatre and pavilion. The work paid off, the park picked up a Green Flag Award for 2020/21, the national mark of a well-run public green space. It sits beside the River Bann at one side, which has shaped the town for centuries.
