Four ziplines and a high-ropes oak wood

The Zip Trekking Experience strings four ziplines across the Faughan Valley, 1.5km in total, with a 550m longest line and a highest point of 50m above the river. It takes one to two hours depending on group size. The Tree Trek Adventure is a separate high-ropes course through three loops of crossings and wobbly bridges among 200-year-old oaks, with a Via Ferrata section, a top platform of 23m and a 105m zip, taking 1.5 to 2 hours. Both use a continuous-belay system, so you stay clipped on the whole way round. Choose one, or book the Full Aerial Challenge to do both across two to three hours.

The story

About this place

Oakfire Adventures has operated as an outdoor activity centre since 2006, set in forest at The Oaks Demesne on the Glenshane Road on the edge of Derry. It sits within easy reach of the city yet feels firmly in the countryside, in woodland above the Faughan Valley.

The centre's two signature experiences are built around the valley and its trees: a zip-trekking course of four lines crossing woodland, water and cliffs, and a tree-trek high-ropes course threading through oaks said to be around 200 years old, complete with a Via Ferrata section. Qualified instructors fit and brief every participant, and a continuous-belay system keeps you clipped on throughout.

Alongside families and individuals, Oakfire caters to school tours, corporate groups, sports teams and celebrations, and also runs paintball sessions, making it one of the north west's busier dedicated adventure sites.
