Learn to sail on a freshwater lough

This is a sailing club first, so the public route in is the training centre. Junior dinghy courses run as week-long days, roughly 9am to 4:30pm, for children aged about 8 to 16, with water-confident 7 year olds sometimes considered if they are strong enough to handle a boat. Adults are catered for too, and the club has run Women and Girls taster sailing sessions for those who want a gentle first go. Boats and buoyancy aids are provided and instructors are RYA-qualified. It suits families who want their children to learn properly on the water rather than a one-off splash.

The story

About the operator

Lough Erne Yacht Club is one of the oldest sailing clubs in Ireland and has been on its current Killadeas site since 1950, on the grounds of the former WW2 RAF Killadeas flying boat base. The clubhouse and bar date from the 1960s and a marina with water and electricity was added in 1992.

It is an RYA recognised training centre for sail and powerboat training, and was one of the first clubs in Northern Ireland to reach the RYA Champion Club standard, in 2002. The club runs youth sailing courses and is run by and for its members.
