The fishing

The main lake holds rainbow trout from 1lb into double figures, triploid brown trout from about 1lb to 8lb, and pike from small jacks up to 20lb. The George Freel Initiative Pond is stocked with rainbow and triploid brown trout to around 10lb and is where fly angling and bubble-and-fly are taught to beginners. Fly fishing runs year-round; light spinning for trout and dead-baiting for pike (October to March) are also allowed. Confirm the current methods and bag limits when you book.

The story

A pond named for a reason

Not every fishery makes room for the first-timer. Islandderry built a whole separate pond for it — the George Freel Initiative Pond — stocked and set up so a child, a nervous beginner or a disabled angler can learn to cast without competing for space with the regulars on the main lake.

That's the tone of the place. Cheap child tickets, rented gear so you don't have to buy anything, and a weekly ladies' evening. You come to catch a fish, but you also come to learn how.
