Your child in the driving seat

The star of the show is a child-sized Land Rover that little ones steer themselves around an outdoor track on the estate. Each one has a steering wheel, starter key, accelerator, lights and a direction switch, with the top speed capped at around 5 mph for safety. Up to two children can ride per vehicle, and an accompanying adult walks alongside holding a remote off-switch. The 30-minute experience starts with a safety briefing. There is a minimum height of 97cm and a maximum of 150cm (5 feet), so it is aimed at children around 10 years old and under rather than teenagers or adults.

The story

About the venue

Glenarm Castle is the ancestral estate of the Earls of Antrim, built by Randal MacDonnell, 1st Earl of Antrim, in 1636 and still in the family. The walled garden dates from the 1820s and was re-imagined and restored in recent years by Lord and Lady Antrim.

In 2023 the walled garden was named Historic Houses Garden of the Year following a national public vote. The Mini Land Rover Experience is a more recent addition, giving families an outdoor activity to pair with a walk round the garden and woodland.
