From the Belfast market to a Santa's grotto in every county, Northern Ireland does Christmas properly. Here are ten of the very best festive days out — the ones worth wrapping up warm for.

  • Something for every age — glittering after-dark light trails and grand castle Christmases for the whole family, a proper Christmas market for the grown-ups, pantos and Santa's grottos for the little ones, and festive skating for the lot of you.
  • Book the big ones early. Light trails, Santa breakfasts and the best panto and market dates go on sale in the autumn and sell out weeks ahead. Sort tickets in November rather than hoping in December.
  • Wrap up warm. The trails and outdoor markets are cold-weather affairs — hats, gloves, warm coats and a flask. Most trails are buggy-friendly on the main paths, and mulled-anything is never far away.
  • Four of these are ours to explore in depth — we've full guides to the Belfast Christmas Market, Christmas at the castles & estates, the Enchanted Winter Garden and the pantomime season, all linked below.
  • When — the season runs from the mid-November light switch-ons right through to early January. The two weeks before Christmas are peak; the first weekend of December is quieter if you've little ones.
