When the nights draw in, Northern Ireland's great houses and estates light up. Here are ten of the most magical — glowing light trails, Santa's grottos and mansions dressed to the nines.

  • Two kinds of festive day — the big after-dark light trails (Glenarm, the Enchanted Winter Garden, the National Trust trails) where you walk a glittering route through the grounds; and the daytime "house dressed for Christmas" visits with decorated rooms, markets and Santa. Some estates do both.
  • Book ahead — these sell out fast. Glenarm's Christmas Experience and the big light trails go on sale early and the best evenings vanish weeks before Christmas. Book the moment tickets open rather than hoping for the day.
  • Wrap up warm. The light trails are outdoors on frosty estate ground — hats, gloves, warm coats and proper footwear. A flask and a torch never hurt, and buggies are usually fine on the main paths.
  • Details change each year. Dates, prices and whether a house does a trail or a market can shift from one Christmas to the next — every entry links to the estate's own page for this season's programme.
  • National Trust members — entry to several of these estates is free for members, though ticketed light trails and Santa experiences usually cost extra on top. Worth checking your card before you book.
