Getting there
Spa Road, Ballynahinch, County Down, BT24 8PT — just outside the town, an easy run south of Belfast.
Montalto is an historic demesne on the edge of Ballynahinch, thought to have taken shape from the middle of the 18th century, when a grand house was raised at the heart of the estate and the grounds around it were laid out with lawns, woodland and water.
Over the generations the land passed through a handful of families, each leaving its mark — the lake, the walled gardens and the sweep of parkland running down from the Mansion are said to have grown up across those long centuries of ownership.
The 400-acre estate was later restored, and its walled gardens brought back to life, so that the demesne could be opened up to visitors. The grand white Mansion and the old stable courtyard — now The Carriage Rooms — were given over to weddings, events and afternoon tea.
Today Montalto is one of the area's best-loved places for a walk — waymarked trails through the woods, around the lake and along the water, a courtyard café to finish, and, in the darkest weeks of the year, an after-dark light trail winding through the trees.
