Christmas Lights Switch-Ons in Northern Ireland
The free night that starts Christmas in every town — Santa processions, brass bands, funfairs and a countdown. Here is what happens where, and when each council confirms its date.
The lights switch-on is the cheapest and best night of the whole festive season — free, outdoors, and the moment Christmas actually starts for most families here. This is what happens in each town, and when to expect the date.
Read this before you plan anything. Most councils confirm their switch-on date in October, not before. We have marked the handful already confirmed for 2026 and, for the rest, described the event and linked the official council page. Be careful with dates you find on news sites in the summer — a lot of them are last year's, and they look current.
They are almost all on a Friday or Saturday in the second half of November, usually somewhere between the 14th and the 29th. Big towns lean to Saturday afternoon or early evening; smaller towns often do a Friday night.
Go earlier than the countdown. The lights themselves take about ninety seconds. Everything good — the stage acts, the funfair, the market stalls, the characters wandering about — happens in the two or three hours before, and that is the bit children actually remember.
Parking and road closures. Town centres close streets for the processions, and the car parks fill an hour before. Park on the edge and walk in, or use the park-and-ride where a council runs one. Check the council page for the road closure notice the week before.
Dress for standing still in the cold. This is the mistake everyone makes once. You are outdoors, not moving, in the dark, in late November. Hats, gloves, an extra layer and a flask make the difference between a lovely night and going home early.
Small towns are often better than big ones. A village switch-on with two hundred people, a brass band and free hot chocolate can be a far nicer night out with small children than a city centre with thirty thousand.

Belfast — City Hall
Belfast City Hall · mid-November · free
The biggest one, and the one that doubles up. Belfast switches its lights on from a stage in front of City Hall with the Lord Mayor, local radio compères and a run of live acts — choirs, dance schools, singers — before the countdown. Crucially, the Belfast Christmas Market opens the same day, usually from noon, so you can make an afternoon of the market and stay for the lights. There is a free festive programme in the city centre for the six weeks afterwards.

The most theatrical switch-on in Northern Ireland. Entertainment and walkabout characters fill Guildhall Square from late afternoon, then Santa leads a procession through the city streets from about 7pm with festive characters and large mobile installations, switching the lights on as he passes. It finishes with the city's main tree — a sixty-footer in Guildhall Square — lit for the first time at around a quarter to eight. Strabane runs its own switch-on the same season.

Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh · Saturday 21 Nov 2026 · free
One of the few 2026 dates already pinned down — the council’s own tender for running the event names Saturday 21 November 2026 — and one of the longest days of it anywhere. Enniskillen runs festive activity through the town centre from about 1pm — brass bands, carol singing, costumed characters, arts and crafts and live performances — building to the main celebration at half four and the official switch-on at half five. Because it starts in daylight and runs all afternoon, it is one of the easier ones with younger children.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council runs Omagh and Enniskillen as a pair, and its 2026 tender for delivering the events names Saturday 21 November for both. Expect the same shape as Enniskillen — an afternoon of street entertainment, music and family activity in the town centre building to the countdown. The council publishes the full programme in the autumn.

Newry fills Marcus Square for a couple of hours in the evening with family activities, live music and character performances before Santa arrives to do the honours. The nice extra here is the Southern Area Hospice Santa Dash, which runs through the city beforehand — you can enter it as a family and make the whole evening an event rather than just turning up for the countdown. Downpatrick runs its own switch-on in the same council area.

Bangor stretches it into a weekend rather than an evening. "Christmas in the City" puts live music at Bangor Castle and around the city centre across a Saturday and Sunday in late November, with the lights themselves switched on on the Saturday evening. Newtownards, Holywood, Comber and Donaghadee run their own smaller switch-ons across the same council area, so there is usually one within a few miles whichever weekend you are free.
Armagh, Portadown, Lurgan and Banbridge — Santa on Tour
Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon · November · free
This council does something genuinely good: rather than one big switch-on, Santa goes on tour, appearing in a different town on successive nights through November — Portadown, Brownlow, Lurgan, Dromore, Banbridge and Waringstown all get their own evening. Armagh City ties its light-up to the Georgian Festival weekend at the end of November, so you get the costumed street festival and the lights together. Check the council page for which night is your town.

Confirmed for Friday 20 November 2026, and the first of the Mid Ulster switch-ons. Cookstown has one of the widest main streets in Ireland, which makes it a genuinely good setting for a street event — plenty of room for stalls, a funfair and a crowd without the squeeze you get in a narrower town centre.
Dungannon, Co Tyrone · Saturday 28 Nov 2026 · free
Confirmed for Saturday 28 November 2026. Dungannon's switch-on lands on the same weekend as a run of local Christmas craft fairs — the Drumglass Parish fayre and the town craft fayre both fall in the same stretch of late November — so it is an easy one to build a whole day around rather than just an evening.

Confirmed for Saturday 28 November 2026, and a good example of why the smaller ones are often the better night out. A town-scale switch-on means you can actually get to the front, the children can see, and it is over in time for bed. Magherafelt and Coalisland run their own in the same council area.
Mid and East Antrim runs three separate evenings so the borough's main towns each get their own. Ballymena is the biggest of the three and usually goes first, with Larne and Carrickfergus following on later nights — Carrickfergus has the advantage of doing it with a Norman castle as the backdrop. The council publishes all three dates together in the autumn.

The best-value one in the country, because it does not stop that night. Lisburn opens with an Enchanted Lantern Walk through the city to Castle Gardens, which then becomes the free Lisburn Light Trail — open daily from late afternoon into the evening, right through until just before Christmas. So the switch-on is the launch of something you can come back to a dozen times for nothing.

The Causeway Coast and Glens council area spreads its switch-ons across Coleraine, Ballymoney, Ballycastle, Limavady and Portrush, each on its own night through November. Coleraine is the largest. The north coast towns are worth the trip in winter anyway — an early tea, the lights, and a walk on a dark beach afterwards is a genuinely lovely evening.

Antrim, Ballyclare and Glengormley each get a switch-on, and Antrim's connects to something bigger — the Enchanted Winter Garden at Antrim Castle Gardens runs through late November and December, a ticketed light trail with a fun fair, a grotto and a tree choir. The switch-on is free; the winter garden is the paid follow-up if the family wants more.

When are the Christmas lights switched on in Northern Ireland in 2026?
Most fall between about 14 and 29 November, on a Friday or Saturday evening. Dates already known for 2026: Cookstown on Friday 20 November, Dungannon and Maghera on Saturday 28 November, and Omagh and Enniskillen on Saturday 21 November per the council’s tender for the events. Most other councils confirm their date in October.
Are Christmas lights switch-ons free in Northern Ireland?
Yes, every one of them. The stage acts, the processions, the countdown and usually the street entertainment are all free. You only pay for food, funfair rides or market stalls if you choose to.
Which Northern Ireland switch-on is best with young children?
Derry has the full Santa procession and is the most spectacular. Enniskillen starts at 1pm and runs all afternoon in daylight, which suits younger children better than a late countdown. And a small-town switch-on — Maghera, Ballyclare, Donaghadee — means you can get to the front and be home early.
What time do the Christmas lights switch-ons start?
The entertainment usually starts two to three hours before the countdown, so from about 4pm or 5pm for an evening event. The lights themselves take under two minutes — go early for the part that is actually worth staying for.
