The Hollow Hill on screen

Pollnagollum stood in for the Hollow Hill, the Brotherhood Without Banners' cave hideout in Game of Thrones Season 3. The waterfall and the dark cave entrance you see from the viewing platform are the exact shots used for the outside of the hideout, where Arya and Gendry are taken to meet Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr. The crew only filmed the exterior here; the firelit interior was a studio build. The name is Irish for hole of the doves, and the stream runs underground for roughly 1.8km before it surfaces again.

The story

About the location

Pollnagollum sits within the Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark on Belmore Mountain, the second highest point in Fermanagh at around 398m. The cave entrance is fed by a waterfall dropping a 12-metre limestone cliff, and the system behind it is reckoned to be the longest cave in Ireland, stretching over many kilometres underground.

Game of Thrones filmed across Northern Ireland for the best part of a decade, and this corner of Fermanagh provided the cave mouth used as the Hollow Hill in Season 3 (2013). What you see on the ground is simply the real place — a forest, a cliff and a waterfall — which is exactly what made it work on screen.
