Questions

Before you go

Do I need to book?
Yes — Oakfire is a booked activity centre, not a walk-in park. Reserve your session online at oakfireadventures.com (up to around 12 hours ahead for smaller groups) or contact them directly for larger parties. Paintball is arranged by phone or text.
What age do you have to be?
The aerial activities — zip trek, tree trek and the Full Aerial Challenge — are for ages 10 and up, with a minimum height of about 1.4m, and 10–15s need an adult with them. Paintball is 16 and over. Check the current requirements when you book.
What can we actually do there?
Take your pick: the Zip Trek runs a series of zip lines over the valley, the Tree Trek is a high-ropes and via-ferrata course through the trees, the Full Aerial Challenge combines both, and paintball is a separate half-day session. Good for families with older kids, groups and parties.
What does it cost?
Roughly: Tree Trek from £22 (child) / £26 (adult), Zip Trek £24 / £29, Full Aerial Challenge £38 / £43, and paintball around £40 a head. Prices can change, so confirm the current rate when you book.

Clothes you can move and climb in, and closed-toe trainers or boots with grip. Bring layers and a coat for the outdoors, plus water — the safety kit is provided.

The story

Adventure in the treetops of the Faughan Valley

Oakfire Adventures sits in The Oaks Demesne off the Glenshane Road, on the wooded edge of Derry~Londonderry where the land drops into the Faughan Valley. It has been running outdoor activities since the mid-2000s, turning a stretch of old woodland into a proper adventure park — the kind of place you come to do something, not just look at it.

The heart of it is up in the trees. The Tree Trek strings a high-ropes and via-ferrata course between the trunks, said to weave past some grand old oaks, with wobbly bridges, cargo nets and balance beams to test your nerve. The Zip Trek sends you flying on a run of zip lines that cross woodland, water and cliff, and the Full Aerial Challenge rolls the two into one longer outing. Down on the ground, the paintball arena runs separate half-day battles through the trees.

It's built for older children, teenagers and grown-ups after a bit of a thrill — birthday parties, groups of friends, stag and hen crews, sports teams and work days all come here. You book your session, gear up with a harness and helmet, and let the instructors talk you through it before you climb. Then it's just you, the ropes and the tops of the trees — and the drive home with the good kind of tired.
