Plan your visit

Book your date before you set off

Mourne Alpacas runs on pre-booked experiences rather than casual walk-in visits, with a live 2026 calendar for spring and summer. You choose the experience — paddock treks, a fuller farm walk, picnic add-ons, private and group bookings, hen and wedding events, and seasonal Cria Watch days for the newborns — then pick a slot online. Prices are shown at the booking stage and vary by experience, so check the current rate when you reserve. Because these are timed, staffed sessions with the animals, arriving on spec isn't the way in; book your date, then just turn up and enjoy the herd.

What to wear & bring

  • 👢Wellies or sturdy shoesIt's a walk on grass across working fields, so feet find the mud — save the good trainers and wear something you don't mind getting dirty.
  • 🧥A coat, whatever the sky's doingThe trek is outdoors from start to finish. A shower only adds to it — the fields smell wonderful after rain, and the alpacas don't mind a bit.
  • 🎩A hat and water on bright daysThe pastures are open with little shade, so on a hot, sunny day a hat and a bottle of water keep everyone comfortable while you soak up the sunshine.
  • 📷A camera or phoneAlpaca faces are made for photos, and the herd with the hills behind is a picture — you'll want it.

The story

A big pedigree herd in the Down drumlins

Mourne Alpacas sits in the soft, green drumlin country around Dromara, the little humpbacked hills of County Down rolling away in every direction and the Mourne Mountains lifting the skyline to the south. It's the kind of quiet farming landscape you'd drive straight through — until you spot a field full of alpacas looking back at you.

The farm is home to what it describes as the largest pedigree alpaca herd on the island of Ireland — over a hundred animals in creamy whites, fawns and rich browns, grazing the paddocks and raising their young. Rather than a walk-in petting farm, it runs on booked experiences: you come for a slot, meet the herd, learn how to handle one, and then walk your own alpaca on a lead out through the fields. Calm, curious and quietly comic, they make easy companions for an hour or two.

Through the warmer months the nursery paddocks fill with cria — the newborns — long-legged and impossibly soft, and the farm builds Cria Watch days around meeting them. Add a picnic, come as a couple or bring the whole group, and it turns an ordinary afternoon into the sort you talk about afterwards: you walked an alpaca, in a green County Down field, with the Mournes on the horizon. Get out and live.
