Who can actually fly here

Access is for UHPC members holding a current BHPA pilot rating, with their own equipment and insurance. The club holds permission from the landowner and maintains a sites guide of rules for each site, available to members. A complete beginner would start not here but with one of the local BHPA-registered schools, training towards a Club Pilot rating before joining the club. This is free-flight soaring, so there is no engine and no instructor strapped on — it is the pilot, the wing and the wind.

Members-only site Pilots only BHPA rating required Works on north-west wind Sperrins thermals Not bookable by public
Good to know before you go:

Flying here runs on the weather, so slots move at short notice — take the reschedule, it’s part of the sport. Some of the sites and clubs listed on Days Out NI are for members and qualified pilots rather than walk-in visitors, so check what’s on offer before you set off. And check the age, weight and health limits before you book: they’re set by the aircraft, not by anyone being fussy.

What to bring

  • 📱A bookingAlmost everything up here runs on a slot you’ve arranged ahead — clubs included.
  • 🧥Warm layersIt’s colder up there than it is on the ground, and colder again waiting on the airfield.
  • 🗓️A flexible dayFlights move with the wind. Keep the day loose and you’ll enjoy it far more.
  • 📷A cameraThe view is the whole point — coast, lough and mountain, all in one lap.

The story

About it

The Ulster Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club is Northern Ireland's BHPA-registered free-flight club, originally founded as the Ulster Hang Gliding Club in 1975. It maintains a network of inland and coastal sites across the province, with rules and access details kept in a members-only sites guide.

Dungiven North-West sits among the club's western, Sperrins-side sites. Like all UHPC sites it is flown under landowner permission and club rules, by members with the right pilot rating — which is why it is a place to fly only if you already belong to that world.
