A guided cliff-face walk you won't forget

The route is about 3 miles (5km) there and back, hugging the basalt cliffs the whole way. You cross the Tubular Bridge, a metal walkway suspended roughly 10m above the Irish Sea, and pass through Wise's Eye into the most dramatic stretch of the original Edwardian path. There are many hand-carved, uneven steps and gradients as steep as 1:4, so it works out as climbing and descending around 50 flights of stairs. A guide leads every tour, groups are capped at 15, and unguided walking is not allowed. Allow about 2.5 to 3 hours for the full experience including the safety induction.

The story

About this place

The Gobbins was designed by railway engineer Berkeley Deane Wise and opened in 1902 as an Edwardian visitor attraction, drawing crowds along the cliffs of Islandmagee until it closed in 1954 amid post-war material shortages and economic decline.

After a major restoration the path reopened as a guided experience, with features including the Tubular Bridge, a 5.4-tonne metal walkway suspended about 10m above the sea, and Wise's Eye, named after the original designer.

The cliffs are basalt, part of the volcanic rock that shapes much of the Antrim coast, with older sedimentary layers nearby recording Triassic and Jurassic seas; an ichthyosaur fossil found at nearby Larne shows this coast was once under a warm, shallow sea.
