Belfast’s maritime story, told afloat

The Belfast Barge is exactly that — a museum on a boat, a 600-tonne barge moored on the Lagan at Lanyon Quay. Step aboard and you're into the story of the river that built Belfast: the shipyards, the industries along the water, and the people who worked them. It's crammed with artefacts from Harland & Wolff and brought to life with the recorded voices of former workers, an easy and characterful hour by the water.

The story

About the Belfast Barge

The Lagan made Belfast — its shipyards and riverside industries turned a small town into a world centre of shipbuilding. The Belfast Barge gathers that story in one unusual place: a museum aboard a working barge, moored where so much of the history happened.

Inside, artefacts from Harland & Wolff sit alongside recorded memories of the workers themselves, giving a human voice to the cranes and the slipways. It's a small, characterful museum with a big story, right on the water.
