Castle ruins on the edge of Lough Neagh, a herd of fallow deer under ancient oaks, and one of Ireland's biggest steam rallies once a year. Shane's Castle is the O'Neills' storied private estate — and when it opens its gates, it's a proper day out.

  • What you'll see — the romantic ruins of the old castle right on the water, the Gothic Camellia House conservatory, a deer park and old woodland running down to the lough. It's also a well-known Game of Thrones filming location (tourney grounds and dragon scenes were shot here).
  • The big draw — the May bank-holiday Steam Rally, one of the estate's flagship public events: working steam engines, vintage vehicles, a country show and family fun across the parkland. Usually the early-May bank holiday — check the exact dates before you go.
  • When it opens — mainly on event and open days. Alongside the Steam Rally there are occasional country shows, rallies and seasonal events through the year. There's no set daily opening.
  • It's a private estate. Shane's Castle is the O'Neill family's home and is not a walk-in daily attraction — it opens to the public on event and open days. Always check what's on before travelling.
  • Some events are ticketed. The Steam Rally and bigger shows charge admission and can sell out or fill up — book ahead where you can, and confirm prices on the day.
  • Getting there & parking — off the Antrim–Randalstown road (BT41 4NE), on the north-east shore of Lough Neagh. Parking is on site for events.
Plan your visit

Can I visit? Yes — on the right day.

Shane's Castle is a private estate that opens to the public for events, not a place you can wander into any day. The big one is the May bank-holiday Steam Rally, with occasional open days, country shows and seasonal events through the year. Some are ticketed, some free — but the golden rule is the same: check what's on and book ahead before you set off.

The story

The seat of the O'Neills

Shane's Castle has been the seat of the O'Neill family for centuries, sitting on the north-east shore of Lough Neagh. It's named after Shane MacBrien O'Neill, and the family's roots on this ground reach back into the old Gaelic lordship of Clandeboye.

The grand house that once stood here was lost — it's said to have been destroyed by fire in the early 1800s — and it's the romantic ruins by the water, along with the Gothic Camellia House conservatory, that visitors see today. The estate is thought to have run its own narrow-gauge railway in years gone by, carrying passengers and goods across the demesne.

Around the ruins spread a deer park and ancient woodland, home to a herd of fallow deer and rich lough-shore wildlife — a working nature reserve as much as a family estate.

In recent years the estate found a new kind of fame as a Game of Thrones filming location, standing in for the tourney grounds and providing the backdrop for dramatic dragon scenes. Today the O'Neills still call it home, opening the gates for the May Steam Rally and other events so the public can share in one of County Antrim's most storied places.
